About Dr. Karla

My name is Dr. Karla Scornavacco.  I write.  I teach.  I research.  My latest project to be released in book form was about a school’s success in having all of its graduates be accepted to college…a school whose senior class had only one parent who had attended college.  I’ve been teaching – officially – since I graduated Northwestern University in 1993.  I earned my Masters at Harvard University.

I teach teachers at the University of Colorado at Boulder.  I earned my PhD there too….building upon what I had already been doing in my spare time: digesting whatever I could that would help me be a better teacher for my students.  My specialty is instructional strategies for students with exceptional learning strengths and challenges, including diagnosed learning disabilities.  I’m an expert in reading development, and know a ton about dyslexia and its impact on the socio-emotional lives of students with the disorder/gift.  I am certified in Orton Gillingham, the premier multisensory approach to reading instruction on which today’s successful intervention programs are built (e.g. Wilson Reading System, Lindamood Bell, Linguistic Remedies).  Another strand of my research and teaching is the positioning of youth in schools, including how students position themselves and are positioned by discourse of school success.

I have two daughters, Siena and Petra.  We live in Lafayette, Colorado…that’s Boulder County and, yes, I like to snowboard.  My husband Brad is my best friend, and together we direct a spectacular one-of-a-kind Martial Arts School.  He’s the creator of WarriorFit, the partner to ScholarFit (www.WarriorFitSystem.com).
